the gates are opening! (and a petition to free Marisol Garcia)

from California Coalition for Women Prisoners:

The gates are opening!

Since Brown took office, people who have been denied for years are finally getting out of prison. CCWP/FBW have been working with the women below for the last year at least and some for about 15 years!

Thank you to all who wrote letters and signed petitions over the years.

But the fight isn't over. California Coalition for Women Prisoners is sending a petition to Governor Brown urging him to release Marisol Garcia, who has been incarcerated 18 years on her 15-years-to-life sentence. Overcoming horrendous abuse herself being sold into slavery from Mexico at age 13, she now helps so many other women inside to heal and obtain resources.

Ms. Garcia's has worked very hard to heal from childhood physical and sexual abuse, human trafficking, and terrorization of herself and her children at the hands of her ‘crime partner’. She accepts responsibility for her actions and has maintained an outstanding disciplinary record for the past 18 years.

This is the second time that the Board has found Ms. Garcia eligible for parole and therefore does not pose a safety risk. The parole decision now goes to Governor Brown. Please urge the governor to uphold Ms. Garcia's parole. You can add your signature to the petition here.
