Survivor Maureen Carroll released after 25 years!

Dear Friends of Free Battered Women,

I'm thrilled to let you know that another incarcerated domestic violence survivor has been released from state prison! Maureen Carroll was released on October 20th, due to a successful *habeas* writ challenging the Governor's reversal of her 2008 release on parole. Ms. Carroll has been in prison for 25 years on a 25-years-to-life sentence.

Free Battered Women especially would like to express our tremendous gratitude and deep appreciation to our colleagues at the USC?s Post-Conviction Justice Project whose vigorous advocacy on behalf of Ms. Carroll has been deeply inspiring.

On July 23, 2009 the Board of Parole Hearings found Ms. Carroll suitable for parole and many of you have signed a support letter, thank you. Fortunately, she was freed before the Governor had the chance to review her case for a * fourth* time.

Free Battered Women wishes Maureen much joy, strength, and courage as she begins the next stage of her journey. We are grateful to everyone working for incarcerated domestic violence survivors' freedom!

Hooray!
