Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women

End indefinite solitary sentences, such as those in use at Pelican Bay State Prison cited by Mother Jones magazine as one of America’s worst lockups. More than 500 Pelican Bay prisoners have been in solitary in excess of a decade. Over 100 have been there more than two.

Resume monthly meetings between prisoners and prison staff. This practice would give prisoners fair avenues for airing grievances, thus going a long way to head off demonstrations like the strike.

Begin regular meetings with Corrections officials and outside advocates in Sacramento. Regular communication is vital to making meaningful incremental changes with less wear and tear on all concerned.
