MEDIA ACCESS FOR PRISONERS

SATURDAY, 9 TO 10:30 AM:
"AIN'T GONNA LET NOBODY TURN US AROUND": the development of a national movement of women prisoners, women released from prison, and their allies.

with:

  • Bernadette Gross, Co-Chair, National Network for Women in Prison (NNWP)
  • Harriette Davis, NNWP and All of Us or None (AOUON)
  • Stormy Ogden, NNWP and AOUON
  • Marlene Sanchez, Director, Center for Young Women's Development
  • facilitated by Ellen Barry (founder of Legal Services to Prisoners with Children)
  • The roundtable will include formerly incarcerated women and allies who will talk about the development of the National Network for Women in Prison and All Of Us Or None, activist networks of formerly incarcerated people emphasizing abolitionist philosophies. We will also include the voices of several women who are currently incarcerated and share their stories of resistance and organizing.

We will encourage attendees to contribute ideas toward a vision for future organizing among both currently and formerly incarcerated people as well as concrete ways in which outside people, especially those in areas with no existing activist organizations, can provide support to women who are resisting/organizing inside.

    AND

    SATURDAY, 2 TO 3:30 PM:
    MEDIA ACCESS FOR PRISONERS

    with:

  • Kameelah Rashid (Building Bloc Collective)
  • Paul Wright (founder and editor of Prison Legal News
  • Ariel Clemenzi, The Abolitionist
  • While working towards the long-term goal of prison abolition, we must also take on more immediate efforts to support those silenced by incarceration. How can we, as outside activists and organizers, help amplify their voices and get their stories out to a wider audience? As we work to incorporate prisoner voices, we must be conscious of concerns such as prison censorship, language barriers and the rising cost of postage and reproduction/publishing.

We will talk about prisoner publishing efforts and other media projects, including the challenges of facilitating media access for prisoners, and the possibilities for others to get involved.
